Making Friends Online

Wow, it has been a blimmin' long time since I wrote a blog post. 9 months in fact...WHAT?! I don't know where that time has gone but the truth is I have been so overwhelmed with work and prioritising YouTube, that I have truly been neglecting my blog which makes me really sad.

So, it's Sunday morning and I was led in bed reading some blog posts as you do, and for the first time in a while I felt the urge to come on here and write up about something that I've been thinking a lot of recently. And that is, making friends online.

Growing up I would find myself in friendship groups that I didn't really feel I belonged in. I didn't really share the same interests with the people I was hanging out with. Although there are a few people I'm sooo glad I met at school (Leah, you're one)! I had all these dreams of moving to London and working on fashion magazines which nobody else really understood. I was often left feeling intimidated by certain people for simply having different interests. It wasn't until I left school that I began meeting girls who I could truly share genuine interests with.

I was working at Bristol Fashion Week (a pretty big production in little old Bristol) which was when I was finding myself in the world of work. And through that I met a LOVELY girl called Kate. I'd say this was the first time I met someone who was equally interested in fashion and beauty to the extent that I was. We both ended up in London (literally living around the corner from each other out of pure coincidence) and I pretty much have her to thank for the majority of my friendships throughout the years as she has introduced me to many of her friends and welcomed me into the group, and for that I am so grateful and thankful for and it's something I will never forget. Kate if you're reading this, I love you!

Today I actually wanted to talk about the friends I've met online, through blogging and YouTube. An incredible community that brings us all together. Whilst like everything, it has its ups and downs, but I think it's amazing how with the power of social media, we can easily tweet and talk to people who we look up to, people who inspire us, our IDOLS. Years ago we'd watch our idols on television and read about them in magazines with a very slim chance of ever being able to meet or speak to them in person. Now, we read and watch the people we aspire to and we can literally send comments directly to them. I admit I do get waves of excitement when my YouTube comments get replied to by the creator, or a tweet gets liked by someone I enjoy watching!

And through all of this I have come to chat to bloggers on Twitter. It's such a privilege being able to chat to people who you genuinely get on with because you all share the same interests - blogging, clothes, makeup, baking, fairy lights, girly-ness, vlogging cameras, pumpkin spice lattes...you get the idea! And recently through building relationships online, I have met some of the loveliest people ever.

The first blogger I met up with was Gemma Storey, and it's a delight to say she's one of my closest friends now! I was blimmin' nervous but we met up in London and had a girly day at Kensington Roof Gardens, Peggy Porschen and Harrods (where we bought a v. expensive Hourglass foundation)! It was sooo lovely to spend time with someone who is basically the same as you! Since then she's even come to my home town for the weekend and I'm definitely going to go and visit her in Essex sometime soon! She's one of the sweetest girls I've ever met!

Along with Gemma Storey, I recently also had the pleasure of meeting two of the LOVELIEST sisters ever - Naomi Victoria and Holly from The Little Blog Of Vegan. We had the girliest day going for a vegan afternoon tea at Sketch (home of the bloggers, right?), followed by more coffee and cake at √Član Cafe in Mayfair. I can't wait for another girly day with them.

Meeting friends you've met online is something I'd encourage to anyone as you can honestly meet some of your closest friends this way. Just drop them a message and ask to meet for lunch or afternoon tea! I guarantee you'll be glad you did. And I know so many bloggers who have made best friends through this community too!

I also just want to do a quick shout out to my best friend Maddie! I didn't meet you online but you're literally one of the most amazing gals I've ever met and I enjoy every single moment when you're around. We just don't stop laughing! Love you with all my heart!

So, hopefully it won't be another 9 months until I blog, but you can definitely keep up to date with my life more frequently on YouTube, Instagram and Twitter.

Much love & speak soon!
Gemma x

  2. Congratulations on doing a wonderful blog post after 9 months of not posting!
I agree - Sundays are a fun time to read blog posts. It's so true that it's easier finding people with common interests online than it is in real life.
I hadn't realised you've been so active on YouTube and just took a peek at your YouTube channel videos - will have to watch some of them later.
It sounds very interesting to have worked at Bristol Fashion Week and its nice that you met Kate there.
That's exciting having had interactions with celebrities on Twitter.
It looks like you have some really fabulous blogging friends - that vegan afternoon tea followed by coffee and cake sounds wonderful.
I love all the photos of you and Gemma Storey together!
P.S.: A week ago I finally published my first post in over a year!! :D
    P.P.S.: Happy Blogtober!!!
